With so many talented artists in the competitive illustration world, one of the crucial tasks for every illustrator is to develop a distinctive style, and to make their work recognisable und unique. In this 3 day workshop, you will be focusing on the development of your own visual language; with assignments taken from concept to final art. You will be guided through the process of creation – from sketching ideas and interpreting the underlying message visually, to completing the final illustration. Individual critiques, group discussions, and one on one portfolio review will be included, and for those who are interested, a painting demo will also be given.
Please bring material for sketching (sketch book, paper, pencils, pens) and everything you need to make an illustration from start to finish (any medium you feel comfortable with). For one-on-one portfolio review, have samples of your work ready (can be viewed digitally). If you are interested in the painting demo and working with acrylics, a list of required basic material will be sent to you after application.
Recommended for intermediate to advanced level.
Intermediate English proficiency: The course will be conducted in English, and there may be some reading materials/discussions involved.

Born in Germany and raised in Texas, Marc Burckhardt’s work juxtaposes historical techniques and symbols with contemporary themes. Through the study and use of old masters’ techniques such as glazing and layering varnishes, he achieves the texture and luminosity that distinguish his paintings. These allegorical and sometimes surreal images are set against the framework of classical painting, creating an uneasy tension between modern and historical meaning.
Burckhardt's paintings have been commissioned by TIME, Rolling Stone, Atlantic Monthly, the New York Times, Major League Baseball, W Hotel Austin, Porsche, Random House, and Pentagram Design. His paintings have been included in national and international exhibits including Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland and SCOPE, New York.
In 2011, Burckhardt was commissioned to create the official portraits for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Ceremonies, and his paintings are in the collections of Ralph Lauren, Oprah Winfrey, Emily Proctor, Jann Wenner, Patricia Arquette, and the late Johnny Cash. His work has won numerous awards, including Gold & Silver Medals from the Society of Illustrators and Cannes Lion, as well as a Grammy for Best Limited Edition Box Set Packaging for "The Legend: Johnny Cash.”
A former instructor at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and Texas State University, Marc was named Texas State Artist in 2010 by the Texas Legislature and the Texas Commission on the Arts. He is a recipient of the prestigious Hamilton King Award, and has since recieved numerous further awards and medals.
