born in germany and raised in texas, MARC BURCKHARDT’S work juxtaposes historical techniques and symbols with contemporary themes. through the study and use of old masters’ techniques such as glazing and layering varnishes, he achieves the texture and luminosity that distinguish his paintings. these allegorical and sometimes surreal images are set against the framework of classical painting, creating an uneasy tension between modern and historical meaning.
his paintings have been commissioned by gucci, porsche, sls resorts, stag's leap vineyards, amazon, time, rolling stone, the new york times, and random house, among others. his gallery work includes exhibitions at art basel (switzerland & miami), affenfaust galerie (hamburg), copro nason (la), mindy solomon gallery (fl), and the arts students league (ny). in 2011, he was commissioned to create the official portraits for the rock & roll hall of fame inductee ceremonies, and his paintings are in numerous private collections. his work has won many awards, including gold & silver medals from the society of illustrators and cannes lion, as well as a grammy for best limited edition box set packaging for "the legend: johnny cash."
marc is past president of the illustration conference (icon) and chairman of the ny society of illustrators 47th annual. a former instructor at the school of visual arts in nyc and texas state university, he was named texas state artist by the texas legislature and the commission on the arts, and is a recipient of the prestigious hamilton king award.
